The Japanese Shipbuilding Industries have successively experienced various kinds of technical changes since the dawn of their history. Aside from the prewar days, the later years of Showa 20th (1945-1955) will properly be recorded in the history of technical development after the World War II. Around that time Japanese Shipbuilding Industries began to be rehabilitated from the devastation due to the war and the restrictions followed thereafter. Moreover, this period has an important significance as the constructive era when the basis of the present World-leading position of Japanese Shipbuilding Industries was established. Since then, the fundamental policy on the shipbuilding techniques in Hitachi Zosen has been "To promote modernization of production system with positive attitude toward technical innovation." Based on this fundamental policy, all kinds of the shipbuilding techniques have ceaselessly been reviewed, studied, and decided to be put into practice. The progress of hull production, mainly from mould lofting to flame cutting, which is to be described in this paper, has also been made through the series of studies under the above mentioned policy. As it is well known, Hitachi Zosen has achieved the numerical control system from hull design to flame cutting for the first time in Japan with success. In the way up to this level, however, there have been various preliminary processes including the development of lofting in reduced scale and the adoption of the optically controlled flame cutting machine, Monopole. With some brief explanations to the above, the details of the development of the numerically controlled flame cutting system will be given in this paper.
