we have often seen the cracks in the aft peak tanks of the ship structures, and it is popularly considered that the cracks result from vibration. So we conducted some experiments and calculations to give a data on the vibration of the stiffened plates that is seen in the aft peak tank. Method of experiments was as follows; stiffened plate of actual dimensions was inserted in to the rigid tank. And whole tank on the vibro table were vibrated. On the specimens, location of stiffeners were one side and one direction, and four types of stiffener variations such as flat bar, angle bar and plate perforation, and T bar were examined. Deflections and strains on the specimens were measured to examine the vibration mode and natural frequency. Water head had six variations and sides of water contact was plate side, stiffener side and both side As the results, we recognized the matter as fallows; 1) When the whole tank are accelerated by 200 gal and the frequency of acc. are the natural frequency of stiffened plates, we recognized rather high stress by that the cracks will occur. 2) Coupled vibration between the beam and the plate between the beam are recognized experimentaly. 3) Torsional deformation of angle bar are not negligible, so the lowest natural frequency of angle bar stiffened plater is about 10% lower than that of T bar plates whose bending rigidity is as same as the angle's one. 4) Deduction of the natural frequency by the water coincides with that of Kito's calculation. 5) Sides of water contact, that is plate side or stiffener side, make no difference to the lowest natural frequency. 6) An Example data on the deduction of virtual mass by the swash openings are obtained.
