In order to investigate the effect of rolling on the ahead resistance of ships, the authors carried out the resistance measurement experiments on the nine ship models with various kinds of types and forms, artificially forced rolling, at the Ship Model Experimental Tank of Kyushu University within the period from April 1963 to March 1965. The ahead resistances of the models were measured by the towing experiments of the models in still water, artificially forced rolling under the conditions of models whose pitching, heaving and surging motions were free, but yawing and swaying motions were restrained. By the analysis of the experimental results we introduced an empirical formula calculating quantitatively the rate of increase of ahead resistance due to rolling of any actual ship whose type, length, speed, rolling angle and rolling period are given. As the examples, we calculated the amounts of C, namely, the values of rate of increase of ahead resistance due to rolling of nine types of actual ships for two kinds of rolling angles and for three kinds of rolling periods, and those calculated values of C were indicated by the contour curves in base the speeds of the ships. We found from those curves that the values of C decrease with the increase of Froude number and increase with the increase of block coefficients, and also that, roughly speaking, the effect of rolling on ahead resistance of ships is comparatively small for the bulbous bow form, large for the Maier form and takes the middle value of the above two for the normal form.
