This study addresses the general problem of efficient resource management in so-called 2-dimensional wireless networks. Herein, a large number of network terminals is in physical contact with a thin planar sheet containing a thin dielectric layer. The layer serves as a medium for simultaneous wireless communications, as well as the propagation of evanescent electromagnetic waves, which remotely power the terminals. We focus our attention on joint allocation of energy and shared channels by links (transmitter-receiver pairs), which require some minimum signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver for a reliable data transfer. The aim is to distributively assign communication channels to network links so as to maximize the number of links, which can simultaneously maintain their individually chosen SINR target using adaptive power control. Our main contribution consists of proposing distributed adaptive algorithms, which, in contrast to the related schemes, achieve (i) a theoretically optimum allocation performance, (ii) minimum complexity in implementations, and (iii) reliable feedback on target SINR feasibility to both active and inactive links. The algorithms are based on novel accurate real-time tracking of the spectral radius of the Foschini-Miljevic matrix by means of distributed interference measurements. Numerical simulations confirm that our approach reaches the performance upper bounds of standard techniques such as random access, carrier sensing or channel measurements.
