As a method to obtain low friction coefficient and high wear resistance under unlublicated condition, the use of DLC (Diamond-like carbon) coating is expanding. It has been reported that hydrogen-free DLC has lower friction than hydrogenated DLC under oil lubricant ; however, the wear volume of hydrogen-free DLC is very small, and thus the quantitative wear mechanisms has not been clarified yet. Therefore, we evaluated the wear properties of different 4 hydrogen-free DLCs coated by different methods. As a result, the specific wear rates of the DLCs were found not to be in reverse ratio to their harnesses. This result indicated that the hardness of the topmost DLC influencing the wear property is different from that of the bulk DLC during sliding.
