It is generally said the gear ratio is given as a function of the rotation angle. Therefore it can be thought that there is the face gear that the gear ratio is variable. This paper describes a study of the face gear aimed to use for the steering, and the face gear with variable gear ratio mating cylindrical gear was discussed. In the case the gear ratio changes linearly at the rotation angle of the pinion on trial, generated the tooth flanks of the face gear to apply the coordinate transformation to the tooth flanks of the pinion, and solve the equation of meshing. In addition, we actually confirmed the existence of the tooth flanks about the gear ratio assumed steering mechanism, and found the feasibility.
