This paper attempts to revalue Japanese-style management in terms of ethic of care and communitarianism. Recently, Japanese-style management has been underestimated in several western countries because of its unfairness. In liberal and capitalist societies, it is believed that adopting the merit system or pay-per performance system is fair. These systems are based on deontology and utilitarianism. For deontologists, an action has true moral worth only if it is done out of duty. In deontology, we are not required to care compassionately for those who are longtime colleagues. In utilitarianism, we do not think about individual cases but rather we must think about the collective happiness of all employees. On the other hand, Japanese-style management offers many advantages to employees, which can be revalued by ethic of care and communitarianism. The norms of caring for the needs of longtime colleagues and maintaining trust with them are thought of as virtues.
