Courtship of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), consists of a sequence of actions initiated by "female sex pheromone" produced in a cuticular wax of the female body. The female pheromone components (3,11.dimethyl-2-nonacosanone and its 29-hydroxy and oxoderivatives) are enzymatically derived from a specific cuticular hydrocarbon and perceived through antennal contact chemoreception by the male. Then, the male turns around 180° and raises his to present the abdominal tip toward the female. The male secretes "male sex pheromone" from his 7th and 8th tergal glands. The tergal secretion strongly stimulates feeding by the female, which leads into a position to facilitate the copulation. The male pheromone is composed of a series of oligosaccharides (e.g. maltose, maltotriose and glucosyl trehalose) and phosphatidyl. cholines. I review here the behavioral and physiological functions of both male and female sex pheromones and the ecological background of the reciprocal communication in association with other chemical cues such as sex attracting pher. omone, aggregation pheromone and dispersal pher. omone which are involved in the life history of the German cockroach.
