Thermoregulation of the sunny butterfly species Colias erate and the forest one Ypthima argus, was studied at the Saigawa-riverside in the lower reaches of Tanbajima-Bridge, Nagano-city, central Japan. The optimum body temperature of C. erate ranged from 35℃ to 40℃, and that of Y. argus from 30℃ to 35℃ in August. The wing base of C. erate, that was observed to expose to the direct sun rays in the lower temperature, got darker in autumn than in summer. It was not considered that C. erate can fly at high temperature around the noon in summer and at low temperature after November, since they could not maintain their body temperature within optimum range. On the other hand, Y. argus entered the forest frequently when the solar radiation increased around the noon in summer, though flowers for nectaring and host plants for oviposition existed in the sunny place, and Y. argus basked in the perpendicular rays as the dorsal basking near the lower limit of optimum body temperature.
