The male genital structure of Hepialidae has been investigated by many authors, because this family is thought to be one of the most important families in Lepidoptera in discussing the phylogeny of the order. As a matter of fact, the male genital structure of Hepialidae is widely different from that of Ditrysia in several respects. However, the authors who have investigated the male genital structure of Hepialidae have used their own terminology rather ambiguously in their discussions and descriptions and this has led to serious confusion in its terminology. In this paper I summarized the terminologies proposed by four authors, Eyer (1924), Philpott (1927), Stekol'nikov (1967) and Birket-Smith (1974 b) in Table 1. As a result of my study, I found that terminology of Birket-Smith, which is mainly based on the intrinsic musculature of male genitalia, is the most useful to describe these specializations clearly. Accordingly, I adopted twin process, processus momenti, valvefla, mesosome and tabulatum from his definition and used these in my descriptions of five species of Hepialidae from Europe, Japan and Formosa which were appeared in this paper. The terms, vinculum, tegumen, saccus and valva, which have hitherto been commonly used, were also used in this paper.
