The immature stages and life-history of Mycalesis gotama nanda FRUHSTORFER were investigated in North Formosa in the period from Oct. 1963 to Jan. 1964. 1. Egg-laying and egg: In the evening the female butterfly lays about 2-6 eggs in rows on the underside of a leaf of the food-plants. An egg is semi-globular, very minutely and irregularly reticulated, and pale green in colour ; its diameter is 0.9 mm.,_and height 1.1 mm. 2. Food-plants: Syntherisma sanguinalis, Leersia hexandra, Oryza sativa, Oplismenus japonicus, Pollinia will denowiana, Paspalum conjugatum, Digitaria chinensis, Miscanthus sinensis. Oplismenus patens. 3. Larva: The larvae are gregarious and sit on the underside of leaves. The coloration of body is green in the 1st and 2nd instars, but after 3rd instar the brown type appears besides the ordinary green one, and the larvae of this type are especially abundant in the gloomy habitat. The green larvae may change into the brown type in every 3rd to 5th instar. As a matter of course, the ratio of the numbers of brown type larvae to those of green ones is highest in the larvae of 5th instar grown under gloomy circumstances. The coloration in larval stage has no relation to that in pupal stage. The length of 5th instar larvae is about 34mm. 4. Pupa: The pupae are usually found on the underside of leaves or stems of the food-plants (in this case the pupae are always green in colour), but they are sometimes found on the dead twings or the clods (in this case the pupae are brown). The length of pupae is about 15mm. The hibernating stage is the pupae. 5. Flying period: Five broods in a year; the first brood appears in the middle to the end of January, the second brood in April, the third in June, the fourth in July and the last brood in October.
