In machining of difficult-to-cut materials with end mill, chatter vibration is serious problem, because it causes poor surface finish and short tool life and cutting conditions must be reduced so that chatter vibration does not arise. So far many kinds of geometries such as variable pitch or variable helix angle have been developed to prevent end mills from chattering. However the performance is not sufficient to realize stable milling in high efficiency conditions. The Author analyzed regenerative vibration in milling and developed variable helix endmill, which has stability in wide range of rotational speed. This paper presents experimental results of the end mill in comparison with conventional one and variable pitch one and shows that variable helix is most effective to suppress chatter vibration.
