南極海に生息する浮遊性巻貝 Limacina helicina antarctica forma antarctica の貝殻外表面は滑らかであるが、螺層が6-7巻きの大型個体では、もっとも外側の巻きに明瞭な肋がみられた。本種の殻の厚さは非常に薄く、殻径が1.4 mm の個体で約5-7 μm だった。走査型電子顕微鏡で観察した結果、貝殻の大部分は交差板構造で構成されていた。優占する底生性のオキナガイ科の二枚貝 Laternula elliptica の殻も薄く、殻長19 mm の個体で約99-132 μm だった。本種の石灰化層は2層あり、外側は厚く、均一構造(粒状構造)で内側は薄く真珠構造であった。このような貝殻構造の特徴について、これまでの結果や南極海への適応という観点から考察した。
