Indentation tests were performed at the ice model basin of Ship Research Institute. A flat indentor was used in the tests. Tests were performed for a wide range of the indentation speed. A new type of pressure sensing system was used in the tests to measure ice load distribution at the ice-indentor interface. The sensor provides data on ice pressure distribution at a very high special resolution of 2.5mm that has never been achieved at any test of this kind. In advance to indentation tests at the ice tank, tests were made for the pressure sensing system to obtain it's characteristics. It was shown that failure mode of ice varies with indentation speed. Ice fails in bending at low indentation speeds, while continuous crushing was dominant at high speeds. Data from the pressure sensor provided detailed information on the ice pressure distribution acting on the indentor. This paper describes the outline of methods of indentation test and pressure sensing system. Results of test for the pressure sensing system are given as well as those of indentation tests. Discussion will be made on the influence of indentation speed on the ice force distribution.
