This paper presents a comparative study between spring models and Boundary Element Method (BEM) for real time animation and virtual interaction of 3D deformable objects in virtual environment. We study the animations of the sample objects built with BEM based method and Spring models method to observe their computation speed, as well as the differences of the deformation and effects result from the arrangement and stiffness of the springs in Spring models animation. Each method has its own advantages which can overcome each other in different situations. Spring models can simulate the deformation with higher speed, less computation cost but they sometimes lead to undesirable vibration and deformation. BEM based method, though it requires much computation cost, can produce more realistic deformation of the sample objects.
