It is a practical problem to determine the strength of ground which is composed of a sensitive soil, due to its high compressibility and brittleness. In this study, the insitu undrained shear strength was estimated on the basis of the rate of the strength reduction (q_<uc>/q_u) which is defined as a index of upper yield value (q_<uc>), obtained from stage loading creep test relative to the unconfined compressive strength (q_u). The consolidation characteristics were investigated by means of a series of consolidation tests performed on three types of specimen. The findings in this study suggest that both the consolidation characteristic and the ratio of the strength reduction are strongly influenced by the value of plasticity index (I_p).
