Peat and volcanic ash are the most commonly found problem soils in Hokkaido. Diatomite and weathered serpentinite are also known to be problem soils. Peat soils spread over the most of the alluvial plain in Hokkaido and its physical properties are well understood. The engineering solutions to the soft ground improvement problems caused by the peat soils have been established. Volcanic ash soils in Hokkaido belong either of pyroclastic fall deposit or pyroclastic flow deposit. They spread over the central and the southern half of Hokkaido. Diatomite soils can be found in the closed valleys along the Okhotsk coast. Weathered serpentinite soils spread intermittently along the KAMUIKOTAN zoon which provides the central axis of Hokkaido.
