This report presents an investigation on the local linear stability of a one-dimensional basic field equation system formulated using an unequal velocity two-fluid model. The stability analysis was applied to the equation system fora steam-water two-phase flow(in which the liquid phase may be in thermal" nonequilibrium) , and dispersion relations for long wavelengths as to density waves, for low frequencies as to acoustic waves and for very short wavelengths as to these kinds. of waves were derived. They were applied both to a stratified flow in a rectangular duct and a bubbly flow. The equation system may be unstable for the stratified flow at long wavelengths(the physical Helmholtz inststability), where the wall friction in the liquid phase has a stabilizing effect but the wall friction in the steam phase and the interphase friction have destabilizing effects. The equation system is stable for the horizontal bubbly flow (d_g< 0.5) at atmospheric condition at long wavelengths in the case of the wall frictional drag in either phase being negligibly small compared with the interphase frictional drag. The equation system may induce unphysical instabilities for both the flows at very short wavelengths. Namely, the system may constitute an illposed initial- value problem. An attenuation coefficient and a propagation velocity of a sound in a horigontal bubbly flow at very low frequencies were estimated. Relation between characteristic roots of the equation system and the stability at very short wavelengths was examined.
