In order to clarify the mechanisms of human tactaile sensation, two types of experiments have been conduced. One of them brought out the relationships between the contact areas and contact loads on human fingers. By using the total reflection method, contact areas of human fingers were visualized. Apparent contact area and real contact area were calculated from acquired images. As a result, the load dependence of the real contact area becomes higher than that of the apparent contact area. The other experiment is the measurement of vibration detectabillity of human fingers. Subjects were provided a harmonic vibration stimulus, and the minimum amplitude of vibration stimulus that human feels was measured. It was clarified that the direction of vibration stimulus and contact load affect on the threshold amplitude of subjects perception.
