The univoltine papilionid, Luehdorfia japonica passes the summer, autumn and winter as a pupa in externally dormant state. Several series of experiments were carried out to elucidate how the long pupal stage is controlled. The results demonstrated that pupae of this papilionid undergo two kinds of diapause, subsequently; a summer diapause immediately after pupation and a winter one in the course of adult differentiation. The first (summer) diapause is terminated by the autumnal short day and moderate temperature, while the second (winter) one by a few-month winter cold. Thus the adult differentiation in this papilionid is proved to be well regulated and synchronized by seasonal cues such as photoperiod and temperature.
