The notion of selfish genes combined with game theoretic approach to frequency-dependent selection has contributed to reevaluation and refinement of the theory of sexual selection originally proposed by DARWIN. Understanding the origin of sexual asymmetries and consequent epigamic selection and intrasexual selection has played a key role in demonstrating evolution which is spread over morphological, physiological and behavioural characters related to mate acquisition. This paper outlines the historical development of sociobiology, its nomenclature and methodology. Following this introductory part, it critically reviews important contributions made to date on mating strategies in butterflies. Some topics are discussed under the assumption that sexual selection operates unilaterally on males: these topics include protandry, mate locating behaviour of males and spatial distribution. Other topics include evidence for sexual selection acting on females, viz. courtship solicitation by females, mate choice by males and maintenance of sex-limited dimorphism in species exhibiting Batesian mimicry and in the genus Colias.
