Mary P. Follett (1868-1933) was a scholar and consultant on business management in the beginning of 20th century. Her management theory was based on her experiences at centers for extended community use in Boston schools. Accordingly, her management theory seems appropriate to non-profit organizations. I will examine this assumption focusing on her leadership theory. According to Follett, the authority emerges not from Power-over practiced in bureaucratic organizations, but from Power-with that is required by the environment surrounding an issue. Therefore, the leader should have enough skills and wisdom to solve issues imposed by the environment. This thought is suitable for NPOs.
