We make clear the hydrodynamic characteristics of a submerged horizontal plate in this paper. According to the previous experimental studies, the submerged horizontal plate has several advantages such as the generation of steady flow and the reproduction of shorter waves. Therefore, we can expect for not only decreasing the wave-induced motions of a very large floating structure (VFLS) but also cleaning the seawater around VFLS by setting up this type of breakwater. This time, we make numerical simulations to make clear the mechanism of hydrodynamic characteristics on the submerged horizontal plates by applying the Marker and Cell method (MAC method). First, we validate the numerical method by comparing with the experimental results with respect to the transmission wave coefficients and the wave exciting forces for heave. Then we discuss the flow field around the submerged-plate. Finally we estimate the transmission wave coefficient and the hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on the submerged-plate, and discuss the effect of inclination of the submerged-plate on them.
