Japan Coastal Tanker Association (CTA), Ship Research Institute of MOT (SRI) started development of a sole watch keeping system with following process, because of the shortage and aging of domestic personnel resources nowadays and in future. First, simulator experiments were carried out to clarify the issues in a sole watch condition and to pick up functional requirements for navigation support system (herein after called NSS). Second, interview to acting officers on watch was made for the evaluation of functional requirements. As the results, Eye free operation of the NSS is strongly requested to keep watching outside continuously. From those requirements, the NSS were designed and developed by using speech communication system as a human machine interface. On the first half year of service operation, the NSS was evaluated through onboard observation and the NSS got good rating from active sailors.
