The method that deals with the operating conditions equivalent to those of conventional propellers is available to the design of contrarotating propellers. This paper represents a method to estimate the equivalent operating conditions of the contrarotating propellers of full-scale ships. This method is based on the model tests in towing tank and its analysis related to performance prediction method. Secondary, a method to estimate the rate of the rotational flow energy flowing to the aft propeller by using the equivalent operating conditions is described. The comparisons between the calculated results and the results obtained from wake flow measurements show that the estimations are reasonable. Then, the estimations of the rotational flow energy rate for the contrarotaing propellers fitted to the two full-scale ships are made. The results show that the difference of the estimated rates between the full-scale ships and the model ships is small though the propeller loading factors of the full-scale fore propellers are smaller than those of the model propellers.
