This report is a brief summary of discussions on a "staggered collocation" Rankine source scheme that was developed in the author's paper[1991] on the basis of Rankine source methods, along with ones on validity of simple source representations of the free-surface flow field and the physical meaninng of upstream differencing of the free-surface condition peculiar to the methods. The conclusion of this was that a shift of the free-surface condition one step upstream in the staggered collocation Rankine source scheme is equivalent to imposing the wave-free condition upstream on the corresponding numerical solutions. The proof will be briefly summarized below again, taking a two-dimensional linear steady ship-wave problem for a submerged body (or a point singularity) in a uniform stream as an example, so that the calculation process can be easily traced analytically without a possible black box with computer use. Extensions to three-dimensions are straightforward.
