A method is presented to calculate the hydrodynamic forces acting on a thin ship in shallow water taking the interaction effects among hull, rudder and propeller into account. By applying the present method, shallow water effects on hydrodynamic characteristics of a turning ship are theoretically investigated. Calculations are made of the hydrodynamic forces for Wigley parabolic hull form in various water depth. The shallow water effects shown by the present calculations agree well with those of the experiments. As a result, it is found that the present method is useful for a better understanding of the shallow water effects on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the turning ship.
