Energy Absorption Analysis for the LNG Carriers in Collision〔含・討論〕

For the evaluation of the strength of LNG carriers in collision, it is important to get the absorbed energy due to destruction of the side structure until LNG begins to leak. The length of destruction is expressed by the incursion depth of the intruding bow in the case of rigid bow. In this report, the correlations between absorbed energy and incursion depth are calculated by the simplified method assuming some damage patterns, for 1) the crushing experiments of test beams, and 2) two defferent types of LNG carriers on the same basis. From these calculations, the following results are obtained. 1) The practical validity of this calculation is verified, at least for the condition of the beam tests. 2) The SPB type LNG carrier has a smaller capacity for energy absorption compared with the spherical tank type LNG carrier. However, when we take the condition of tank rupture into account, the SPB type LNG carrier could have capability as much as the spherical tank type LNG carrier.
