In recent years single-boom-derrick systems have been widely adopted to the cargo gear for dry-cargo ships. Among them, a guyless derrick system with two toppings has been deemed the most typical and seems to have been used very often. We hereby set forth our views on the range of safety handling of the cargo gear equipped with these guyless derrick booms, paying special attention to the fact that the limit angle of the derrick booms in slewing is influenced to the great extent by the ratios (P_H/L_B, P_S/L_B, B_S/L_B) of principal dimensions of the derricks and the ship's condition (namely trim and heel angles) when being served for cargo handling.
