Grain rule for bulk carrier was established at the International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea 1960 (SOLAS '60) but recently, the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) recommended the amendment of this provision. In order to investigate their propriety and suitability, the author studied the mechanism of grain shift due to ship motion by model experiment and theoritical analysis, and next, compaired the effects of ships dimensions, especially B/D and D.W., between existing rule and amendment by series calculations. In conclusion, the author proposed the following judgements for safety of bulk carrier. 1. To get minimum GM enough to keep stability of grain surface. 2. After grain shift, to have more residual dynamical stability than dynamical stability lost by rolling. i.e. work ratio C≧1.0.
