Dense GPS networks are capable to provide valuable information about the water vapor distribution with high spatial resolution and low latency. The usage of such measurements for weather prediction has been intensively studied in the recent years and the assimilation of such information in numerical weather models has become a routine task for many weather agencies. On the other hand, space geodetic techniques (including GPS) and their products (coordinate time series, Earth orientation parameters and other geophysical quantities) could be improved if atmospheric path delays are known with sufficient accuracy. Thus we try to answer the question to which extent numerical weather models are capable to correct space geodetic observations. Moreover we discuss the prerequisites of this strategy on numerical weather weather models, concerning accuracy, temporal and spatial resolution.
