In Japanese large cities, the utilization of the deep subsurface space for public works such as waterworks, roads and railways has started. Although the ground conditions in the cities differ depending on the region and depth, etc., they consist mainly of sand, gravel and clay. And generally the ground water table is high and close to the ground surface. This paper describes the present status of projects utilizing deep subsurface space in urban area, technological developments, and problems in constructing structures there.
