ClassNK carried out the "development of environmental performance technical appraisal services of container ships" over a two-year period from 2007. This study was commissioned by the Japan Ship Technology Research Association, to conduct as part of research services with the cooperation of shipping companies, shipbuilders and other concerned organizations, as well as the National Maritime Research Institute. As a result of this research, an index of the propulsion performance for container ships in actual seas was developed, and index values can be assigned as the decrease in ship speed from the ship's speed in still water. These findings make it possible that a ship's performance in actual seas is grasped at the design stage. Based on this index, ClassNK has begun offering an appraisal service in the hope of playing a useful role in the promotion of ships that are better suited to their actual service environment.
