This paper focuses on difficulties in diagnosing second language learners with LD (Learning Disabilities). The total number of foreigners studying Japanese grows yearly. Accordingly teachers are encountering students with various academic abilities and some have learning disabilities. The foreign students with learning disabilities need special support to take classes, just as with Japanese LD students. In Japan several LD checklists are made, but they do not identify foreign students who have LD needs. Linguistic errors made by foreign LD students are very similar to errors made by all second language learners. This paper compares some LD linguistic features that are listed and common errors that are analyzed in the study of language pedagogy, pointing out the necessity of making LD checklists for foreign students who are taking Japanese as a second language.
