Empathy is one of the most important concepts in social work. In this paper, we examine it from a phenomenological point of view and try to discern its philosophical meaning in social welfare theory. Using the theories of inter-subjectivity of Max Sheler, M. E. Merleau-Ponty, etc., we conclude that empathy is based on interdependent personalism, which is enabled by a departure from the objectification of human nature. In this way, this study aims at an analysis of empathic interdependence of human existence as it progresses toward welfare.
