Between 1871 and 1876, Capt.L.L.Janes instructed the selected boys and girls in Western culture and science without any interpreters at the Kumamoto Yo-Gakko. Depending on the materials left in Kumamoto, I drew a possible conclusion that the Janes' route to the teacher's house in Furushiro ran along the river bank of the present Tsuboi River, instead of the Shirakawa River, as has been believed so far.Besides, this paper attempts to discuss the background of the establishmemt of the Yo-Gakko and itscontroversy first, the education including the school schedules, the first operation at the school and the study days for learning the alphabet next, and finally the reason for the closure of the school. This studyleads us to a view that the duration of the Kumamoto Yo-Gakko was strongly influenced by the political power and the social situation in those days.
