The purpose of this study is to examine some features of the missionary theology of D.T.Niles, a Ceylonese theologian, and his theological contribution to the ecumenical movement from historical and missiological perspectives. Niles had already discussed in the 1930's the missionary nature of the church in relation to the total mission of God in Christ operative in the historical world. He made an initial contribution as an Asian church leader to the development of the concept of "missio Dei" (mission of God) which appeared in the 1950's. He stressed the selfhood and integrity of the church in each place and Christ's prior crossing of every religious or secular frontier. In his theology in which the historical and cultural context of the Asian churches is seriously taken, the indigenization of the church and the relationship with people of other faiths are the essential and inseparable agendas for the church in the mission of God. Some of his proposals crystallized in the projects or study processes in the ecumenical movement in the post-war period and they are still significant for the church today.
