Ten patients had open mitral commissurotomy, and ten other patients had various value replacements. Also, in 5 dogs, experimental acute heart failure was created. The 20 patients were investigated soon after the operation using impedance cardiograph and hemodynamic study. The following results were obtained. 1. High D slope appeared in the dogs by infusing emulsion. This was mostly correlated with left ventricular diastolic compliance. 2. The D slope appeared after value replacement in the 10 patients. In half of the cases, the D slope was higher than 0.5Ω/sec .. 3. In 14 patients, comparison was made between D slope and left atrial pressure, only 6 of the 14 correlated well (γr=0.8), so we can conclude that in general, there is no correlation. 4. In both the dogs and the patients, the D slope indicates the state of heart failure. It is thought that D slope is correlated with left ventricular diastolic compliance.
