A commercial bank is a financial intermediary which has both a payment function and a financial intermediation function. A payment function consists of a deposit creation process and a deposit transfer process. And a financial intermediation function means a fund transfer from surplus sectors to deficit sectors. Nowadays, there are many types of financial intermediaries which have a financial intermediation function besides a commercial bank, but only a commercial bank has both a payment function and a financial intermediation function. This is a uniqueness of a commercial bank. In this article, at first, to show the structure of a payment function of a commercial bank, we take up the mechanism of the deposit creation process and the deposit transfer process. And then, we move on to the topic how the financial intermediation function of a commercial bank is combined with the payment function in a commercial banking. Lastly, we enter into the financial intermeditation function of nonbank financial intermediaries.
