When the behavior of the three year old children is observed from the ethological point of view, two distinct tendencies are recognized. One is the attachment behavior toward mother which is innate from the early infancy, and the other is the need toward independence from mother which is a manifestation of the ego function rapidly developed around this period. These two needs of "dependence" and "independence" are in conflict with each other and lead a child to separation anxiety situation characteristic of the three-year-old. This is reflected on concrete behaviors of c children. Bowlby, J. who extensively studied the attachment behavior and the separation anxiety in case its satisfaction is inhibited, thought they are innate in mankind. According to him, a prototype of "anxiety" of mankind is already recognizable in the early infancy, and is termed "primary anxiety". He showed this anxiety underwent various developmental change. Thus mother-child separation anxiety of the three-year-olds can be a manifestation of this primary anxiety and may exert a great influence on the later mother-child relation, interpersonal relation in general, and ego development. With these facts in mind, a systematic method of observation was developed from the ethological point of view to investigate various aspects of mother-child separation anxiety around the three-year-old period. Various modes of mother-child relation were thus found. Many other relevant factors were also investigated. Thus we tried to elucidate the status of mother-child separation anxiety in the course of ego development from behavioral characteristics of the children in a set situation and of the mother and child in their own home.
