Hypoxia and asphyxia are known to course sever brain damage. ^<31>P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) permits the noninvasive monitoring of phosphorus-containing metabolites and intracellular pH in a variety of tissues in vivo and in vitro, and has been used to evaluate high energy phosphorus metabolism in hypoxia or ischemia. Therefore, we have extended MRS to the studies of the metabolism of high energy phosphorus including ATP, phosphocreatine, inorganic phosphate and the intracellular pH in the brain of neonatal rabbit in hypoxia. Furthermore we have analyzed brain function during hypoxia by electroencephalogram (EEG) to elucidate the relationship between energy metabolism and function of brain during hypoxia. The neonatal rabbit was expose room air for 20 minutes. Hypoxic status was made by flowing gas containing 15% oxygen gas for 30 minutes. Phosphocreatine, ATP and intracellular pH of the brain of neonatal rabbits decreased after hypoxia was started, and returned to the normal level within 60 minutes after hypoxia. Inorganic phosphate increased in hypoxia, and returned rapidly to the normal level at 10 minutes. EEG in hypoxia was characterized by decreasing of wave frequency and emergence of spiky wave, and not returned to normal level after hypoxia.
