Between November 1995 and March 2000, radial artery grafts were used in 52 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). To evaluate the usefulness of the radial artery (RA) as graft material for CABG, histological studies of the RA were performed. Specimens were obtained from both sides of 15 RAs during the operations, and the degree of arteriosclerosis in each specimen was evaluated by microscopic examination. From the pathological view, there was little arteriosclerosis in RA. Using the KS-l00 system, the internal diameter of the proximal side (Dp), that of the distal side (Dd), the mean thicknesses of tunica media (Tm) and the maximum thicknesses of tunica intima (Ti) of both sides of the RA were measured. The mean Dd/Dp was 0.803 ± 0.064. The mean Ti/Tm of the proximal side was 0.244 ± 0.033, and that of the distal side was 0.282 ± 0.057. There was no significant difference between the Ti/Tm of both sides, but in the distal side of the RA, the intimal proliferation tended to be more severe. The results suggest that the nearer the RA is to the proximal side, the more excellent it is as a conduit for CABG.
