The instrument was so that radiation exposure of the patient during x-ray examination could be measured as Surface Exposure Integral (SEI) in R-cn^2. A flat type ionization chamber with parallel plate electrodes was attached just beyond the diaphragm of a diagnostic x-ray apparatus. The electrical output from this ionization chamber is the amount of ionization current propotional to the field size and the intensity of the x-rays with reference to patient. This instrument can not only respond to the exposure continuously as in fluoroscopy but also the exposure momentarily as in radiography. The SEI for a patient at the end of the examination is automatically printed out and recorded as R-cm^2, with the identification number of the patient and the date of examination. This paper describes the out-line of this trial device and its characteristics.
