The effects of exposure to lead from auto exhaust gas on residents of areas of Nagoya City with heavy traffic were examined at the same time of year in 1970 and 1971. The following conclusions can be drawn. 1) Exposure to lead in the air caused by auto exhaust gas pollution affects the health of residents. 2) The significant influence of lead exposure was clearly noted, in both males and females, in blood and urinary lead levels as well as in urinary ALA. An appreciable influence was also found in urinary coproporphyrin. 3) Over a period of a year, the effect of a reduction of atmospheric lead level was observed in blood and urinary lead levels and in urinary ALA.
