Immunological responses were studied in normal pregnant women and patients suffering from threatened abortion by means of phytohemagglutinin-induced lymphocyte transformation test. Lymphocytes from normal pregnant women showed diminished response to phytogemagglutinin. Comparative analyses of phytomagglutinin response of lymphocytes from normal pregnant women and patients suffering from threatened abortion in the first trimester have shown that the lymphocytes from the former group registered decreased reactivity, while those from the latter did not. Upon examining the effects of sera from pregnant women on lymphocytes response to phytogemagglutinin, it was found that the sera from normal pregnant women had an inhibitory effect on phytohemagglutinin response, but that the sera from patients suffering from threatened abortion did not show any inhibitory effect. Moreover investigated were the effects of steroids and pregnancy-associated substances on lymphocyte response to phytogemagglutinin. These included human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), hCGβ-subunit, progesterone, conjugated estrogen, estriol, prostaglandin F_<2α>, testosterone and predonisolone. As result, hCG, progesterone and predonisolone were seen to show inhibitory effects on phytohemagglutinin response.
