EYE ABNORMALITIES IN FETUSES CAUSED BY SIMULTANEOUS IRRADIATION OF X-RAYS AND ULTRASOUND

Pregnant ddN mice were irradiated with 100R or 150R of X-rays and/or ultrasound at 1.5 or 3.0 W/cm^2 (1 MHz) for 5 minutes on day 7 of pregnancy. The offspring irradiated in the uterus were grossly examined and their eyes were histologically studied on day 18 of gestation. The following results were obtained. 1. The embryocidal effects of 150R of X-rays were enhanced by ultrasound at 3.0 W/cm^2, but not at 1.5 W/cm^2. 2. The teratogenic effects of 100R of X-rays were enhanced by ultrasound at 3.0 W/cm^2, but not at 1.5 W/cm^2. 3. Various degrees of abnormal findings were observed in the anterior chamber and chamber angle. In cases with severe abnormalities, the mesodermal tissue corresponding to the anterior lobe of the iris closely contacted the corneal endothelium. In cases with moderate abnormalities, much mesodermal tissue was noted between the corneal endothelium and the iridial portion of the optic cup, but the anterior chamber was observed near the pupillary area. In cases with mild abnormalities, the mesodermal tissue of the anterior lobe of the iris was partially attached to the corneal endothelium. It was considered that the series of the three abnormalities mentioned above was caused by the faulty differentiation and growth of the mesodermal tissue of the angle. 4. Some cases with goniodysgenesis induced by the present experiment were accompanied by other eye abnormalities such as retinal eversion with uveal coloboma, defective separation of the lends vesicle from the surface ectoderm, excessive persistence of the primary vitreous and dysgenesis of the optic nerve. 5. It was presumed that the formation of the anterior chamber and the chamber angle might become self-determining by day 18 of gestation.
