Pulse width of a conventional laser radar (lidar) determines both range resolution and the accuracy of wind velocity, and improvement of range resolution causes decrease of the accuracy of wind velocity. We propose a novel method of observing wind velocity, which can improve range resolution without degrading the accuracy of wind velocity measurements. The proposed method uses a waveform of transmission which consists of two pulses. Width of each pulse determines the range resolution and interval between two pulses determines the accuracy of the velocity. Principle of the proposed method is confirmed by computer simulations.
