• Approximately 1,500 families living in 11 localities from a hyperendemic goiter area in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, have been surveyed. The distribution of goiter according to age has been analysed through simultaneous confidence intervals for contrasts among multinomial proportions. The frequencies of goiter in the classed lower than 5 years old were systematically lower than 25%, with the pooled data showing a frequency lower than 10% (in the other classes, older than 5 years, the frequencies were always higher than 35%). The results supported the conclusion that the prevalence of endemic goiter is effectively dependent on the age distribution of the population.
