The concentrations of progesterone, estrone, estradiol and estriol in human uterine cervix and myometrium in non-pregnant, early and late pregnant women were estimated by radioimmunoassay. Each material was obtained from 23 patients; 4 were non-pregnant, 8 were early pregnant (6-14 weeks of gestation) and 11 were late pregnant (32-42 weeks of gestation). There was no difference in the concentrations of each hormone between the cervical and myometrial tissues in non-pregnant women. The concentrations of each hormone in the myometrium increased with the progress of gestation and reached to the maximum at late pregnancy. The concentrations of each hormone in the cervical tissue also increased with the progress of gestation as indicated in the myometrium, except for marked elevation of estradiol concentrations in late pregnancy. Some correlations were obtained between the cervical estradiol level or estradiol/progesterone ratio and Bishop'spelvic score in late pregnancy. There was no significant difference in the myometorial tissue hormone levels during cesarean section between the subjects with and without labor pains. Howevwe, notable difference in the cervical tissue hormone levels under the same conditions was not seen in either subjects. These results suggested that the"ripening"of the uterine cervix was due to the elevated estradiol level and/or estradiol/progesterone ratio in the cervical tissues.
