The antigenicity of placental trophoblast cells and sensitized peripheral lymphocytes in patients with toxemia of pregnancy were investigated in comparison with normal pregnant women by macrophage migration inhibition test (MIT). The effect of autologous serum on the MIT was also examined, and the following results were obtained: (1) The average mitgration percentages of macrophages tested with autochthonous lymphocytes and trophoblast cells in normal and toxemic pregnancy were 90.2±16.5% and 59.9±14.6% respectively. The difference wsa statistically significant (p<0.001). (2) The average migration inhibition percentages of the patients with toxemia of pregnancy corresponded with the severity of toxemia of pregnancy. (3) The average migration percentages tested with lymphocytes from patients suffering from toxemia of pregnancy and trophoblast cells from allogenic normal pregnant women, were significantly higher than those of the autologous incubation (p<0.02). (4) In normal pregnancy, little sensitization of the maternallymphocytes was obtained. (5) The migration percentage did not consistently change in either normal or toxemic pregnancy by the addition of autologous serum.
